Bangladesh women cricketers swat Maldives aside in SA Games

Having already secured the final berth, the Bangladesh women’s cricket team sealed a huge victory over Maldives women in the ongoing XIII SA Games women’s cricket tournament at Pokhara Rangasala stadium in Nepal yesterday. Nigar Sultana and Farzana Hoque smashed unbeaten tons to guide Bangladesh women in posting their highest ever T20 total of 255 runs. In return, they restricted the opponents to only 6 runs i .

Opting to bat, Shamima Sultana and Sanjida Islam, the two openers of Bangladesh, got off to a poor start after the duo was dismissed cheaply in the first two overs, scoring 5 and 7, respectively. The early loss of two wickets, however, did not stop Nigar Sultana and Farzana Haque to wield their willows, unleashing an onslaught on the opposition bowlers from both ends.

It was raining boundaries all over the ground, continuing till Bangladesh women finished their innings with a record 255 runs on the board. Nigar and Farzana shared a massive 236-run partnership between them for the third wicket and remained unbeaten to reach a milestone. Shamma Ali took a Bangladesh wicket conceding 38 runs.

With the ton, Nigar Sultana became the first Bangladesh woman to score a T20 century. Her excellent unbeaten 113, which came off just 65 balls, contained 14 fours and three sixes, while Farzana Haque, who followed Nigar Sultana to book her first century, scored an unbeaten 110 off 53 balls with 20 fours.

In reply to the gigantic target, the Maldives team, who started their T20I campaign with this edition of SA Games, made a harrowing start with the bat as they collapsed one by one within the power-play. They lost seven wickets scoring only 3 runs in the first five overs. The Bangladesh side, however, had to wait until the ninth over to find another breakthrough and eventually grabbed the last three wickets to bowl out Maldives women for 6 in 12.1 overs, winning the match by 249 runs. Shamma Ali was the top-scorer for Maldives, scoring two, while only two others could open their accounts with both scoring one run each.

Ritu Moni and Salma Khatun shared three wickets apiece, while Nigar Sultana was named Player of the Match for her brilliant 113.

With three consecutive wins, the Tigresses will certainly be eyeing to bag a gold medal by winning the final, slated to be played on December 12 at the same venue. Before the latest win, they had defeated Sri Lanka and Nepal by seven and 10 wickets respectively.

The Maldives, a comparatively weaker team in the competition, had earlier been dismissed for 16 and 30 runs by Nepal and Sri Lanka respectively.
