BNP vents anger at Khaleda’s bail process

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
BNP vents anger at Khaleda’s bail process

The opposition BNP yesterday expressed its anger and resentment at the decision of Appellate Division of the Supreme Court over release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia.

“The entire nation is not only been frustrated but also aggrieved at the decision of the Appellate Division. We are concerned and aggrieved…Denial of bail to a former opposition leader and a popular female leader aged 73 is not only contrary to the existing norms but also inhuman behaviour to her,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Speaking at a press conference at party central office at Naya Paltan in the capital yesterday, he said the entire nation is anxious at the deterioration of health condition of the former premier.

“Her (Khaleda’s) release is a must to provide her better treatment. If further treatment is not given she may lose her life anytime,” he apprehended.

Mirza Alamgir made it clear that the present government will have to take the responsibility if her health condition deteriorates further for not getting proper treatment.

The BNP leader made these comments immediately after the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court

deferred the hearing in Khaleda’s bail petition for a week as a medical report on Khaleda health condition was not submitted.

Earlier, a 6-member Appellate Bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, fixed December 12 for next order on the bail petition asking the government to submit the health report by December 11.

Mirza Alamgir said as per the SC directives it was mandatory for BSMMU vice chancellor to place the medical board reports before the court.

“We think the BSMMU authorities are guilty of contempt of court as it failed to provide report that was mandatory,” he added.

Replying to a question, he said they would wait for seven days and next course of action would be taken at the party standing committee level if the party chairperson is not given bail.

Mirza Alamgir said Khaleda is seriously sick and suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and she is everyday going towards disability.

She (Khaleda) cannot move without help of others even she cannot rise from bed without help from others.

Despite serious deterioration of her health condition, the government obstructed her release and getting bail, he alleged.

The BNP leader criticised the prime minister’s statement on Khaleda saying that it was interference in the court affairs.

The prime minister’s statement proved that she and her government do not want the release f former premier.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday reportedly said that Khaleda remains in king like condition.

BNP leaders- Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moin Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Selima Rahman, among others, were present at the press conference.

Later, Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal, an affiliate of BNP, brought out a procession at Naya Paltan area demanding the release of Khaleda Zia.
