Rakibul Islam Regan, a death-row convict in the Gulshan café attack case, yesterday (Tuesday) claimed that someone from the crowd passed him the Islamic State logo-emblazoned cap while he was going to court for the verdict on November 27.
He made the claim when produced before the Dhaka Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal for a hearing in a case filed over the Kalyanpur militant raid in 2016.
He was seen wearing a prayer cap inscribed with the Islamic State emblem as the anti-terrorism court pronounced the verdict in the café attack case.
The incident sparked criticism across the country as to how a terrorist could carry the cap bearing the IS logo to a Dhaka courtroom and then put it on for all to see. Questions were raised as to how did the person continue wearing the cap while surrounded by law enforcers and where did the cap come from.
When Regan was produced before a Dhaka court in connection with the Kalyanpur attack case, the court asked Regan about the cap.
He replied: “An unknown man in the crowd gave me the cap.”
The judge asked who was the man. Regan said: “I do not know him.”
