The customs intelligence personnel arrested a man and seized 72 gold bars weighing 8.450 kilograms from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport here last night. The detainee was identified as Himel Khan, a passenger of EK-584 flight of Emirates Airlines, which landed at the airport around 11:45pm on Monday from United Arab Emirates, Customs House Assistant Commissioner Sajjad Hossain told BSS. On a tip-off, the preventive team of Dhaka Custom House followed him to green channel. Later, he was detained and interrogated by the team members. He initially denied having gold bars in his possession but the officials searched his backpack and recovered 72 bars and 450 grams of jewelries, he said. The estimated value of the seized gold bars is more than Taka 4.22 crore, Later, he was handed over to police and legal steps have been taken under the customs act, Sajjad added.
