31 SC staff transferred over alleged irregularities

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Supreme Court administration yesterday transferred 31 of its staff from the filing and affidavit sections of the Supreme Court in a bid to reduce irregularities and corruption in the judiciary. The Supreme Court administration took the decision after the chief justice expressed his dissatisfaction over various irregularities. Special Officer of the Supreme Court Mohammad Saifur Rahman confirmed the matter and said they have been transferred on charges of irregularities.

Earlier on Monday, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain expressed his disappointment over the failure to prevent irregularities even after installing CCTV cameras in the affidavit section of the Supreme Court. On that day, the Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said, “A case hearing that was third on the list on Monday, surprisingly went down to number 89 of the appellate division's cause-list.” The chief law officer of the state also said that many people have turned into millionaires just by changing the cause-list serials in the Supreme Court.

After yesterday’s transfer order, Alam told reporters that the authorities concerned had to take tough action against the concerned officials as they were involved

in irregularities and corruption. “I think the chief justice has taken a tough action against the officials who were involved in irregularities. It is part of actions to free the judiciary from corruption,” Alam noted.

Following the attorney general’s allegation over change in the cause list, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Monday told in the court that CCTV camera installation at the affidavit section could not stop malpractice.

The chief justice also said that many state prosecutors do not even bother to come to the court, probably because they are highly paid.

Later, the chief justice summoned Deputy Registrar Mehedi Hasan on Monday during the court’s proceeding. However, the explanations given by Mehedi Hasan displeased the Appellate Division led by the chief justice and the court directed the Supreme Court administration to take step over the irregularities.
