The High Court (HC) yesterday observed that it is a disgrace for the state if the freedom fighters (FF) remain needy in financial terms. “It is shame for us to see the freedom fighters financially needy. Getting allowances is their rights,” the HC bench comprising Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Ahmed Sohel came up with the observations while delivering its order on eight separate writ petitions filed by 208 freedom fighters from Chandpur, Magura, Kushtia and Pabna districts. At the same time, the HC bench also directed the government to include names of 208 freedom fighters in the official gazette and take necessary steps to give them monthly allowances.
The HC bench also asked the Liberation War Affairs Ministry to comply with the directives in 90 days after receiving the full text of the judgment. A total of 208 freedom fighters jointly filed the writ petitions with the HC in 2016 challenging legality of the government’s decision to remove their names from the official gazette. After the HC order, Deputy Attorney General Amit Dasgupta told reporters that the selection committee concerned had recommended including names of the 208 freedom fighters in the official gazette but the ministry has omitted to do so. After holding hearing on the petitions, the HC bench delivered the verdict yesterday. Barrister Taufiq Inam appeared for the writ petitioners.
