Petrol pump owners halt strike until Dec 15

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Petrol pump owners and workers have suspended their strike until December 15 after receiving government assurance of looking into their 15-point charter of demands. Bangladesh Petrol Pump Owners Association announced the decision following a meeting with Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) at Segunbagicha in the capital yesterday. Sajjadul Karim, president of a faction of Bangladesh Petrol Pump Owners’ Association, announced the decision 30 hours after they started an indefinite work abstention at all petrol pumps of Rajshahi, Rangpur and Khulna divisions. He said that the next decision will be taken on December 15 after an inter-ministerial meeting in this regard. “The discussion was very fruitful. Among their demands, BPC will deal with two or three related issues. The rest of the matters will have to be discussed in the inter-ministerial meeting,” said Syed Mehdi Hasan, the BPC director (marketing).

On December 1, leaders of Bangladesh Petrol Pump O Tank Lorry Malik Shramik Oikya Parishad enforced the indefinite strike in Rajshahi, Rangpur and Khulna divisions to press home their 15-point charter of demands. Their demands include paying 7.5 per cent commission on fuel sale, introducing accident insurance of Tk 5 lakh for Tank Lorry workers, increasing fare of Tank Lorry, stopping police harassment and dismissing the order to collect licenses for pumps from the Department of Environment.

Due to the strike, oil extraction and marketing at Padma, Meghna and Jamuna oil depots in Khulna also remained suspended. So supplying of fuel oil in 15 south-western districts including Khulna was halted. As the fuel oil supply remained suspended following the strike, the passengers of 21 districts had to experience troubles. The ordinary customers were also distressed by the sudden strike as they were forced to buy fuel at a higher price from the retailers.
