Dipu Chakma won the first gold medal for Bangladesh in Taekwondo in the ongoing XIII SA Games in Nepal yesterday while Humayra Akhtar Antora bagged the first medal for Bangladesh confirming the bronze in Karate. Dipu ensured the gold after defeating his Sri Lankan challenger in the men’s single pomade above 29-kg category. “I'm in a trance. Bangladesh.” Dipu from Rangamati scored 16.24 points with 8.28 in the opening round and 7.96 in the second round. Lakshman Ilandarige of Sri Lanka scored 8.22 to win silver while Gangphung Gangsa of India won bronze with 8.14 points.
Bangladesh won three gold medals in Taekwondo in SA Games before. Since the sport included in the Games in 1999, Mizanur Rahman won first gold in Colombo 2006 while Sharmin Rumi and Shammi Akter won two gold medals in Dhaka 2010.
Humayra Akhtar Antora won the bronze in Karate when she ensured the third position out of five competitors in the women’s single Kata, Pakistan won the gold and Nepal won silver in this event.
“I’m having mixed feeling because it’s good to earn Bangladesh the first medal but gutted not to win the highest medal,” said Antora after the end of her event where Pakistan and Nepal won gold and silver respectively.
Humayra Akhtar Antora in her reaction after opening Bangladesh account the medals table said, “Actually I expected more but a little bit misbalanced on the mat caused the problem. My main event is kumite which will be held today (Tuesday). I’ll give my best to win more than just bronze.”
Antora, who just completed her HSC this year, will compete in the women’s 61kg kumite event on Tuesday.
Following the bronze of Huamyra in the women’s Karate, Mostafa Kamal and Mownjera Bannya won silver in men’s and women kumita.
Mostafa Kamal won silver in the men’s single Under-55 category while Bannya also won the silver in kumita of women’s Under-45 category, in the men’s Under-84 kg kumita Mohammed Ramjan and above 84kg kumita Atiqur Rahman won bronze and Fahmida Akhtar won bronze in women’s Under-50 kumita.
Hassan Khan also secured bronze medal in the men’s single kata when he was third among four participants and in the Kata men’s and women’s team events Bangladesh won bronze.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Hasan Khan, one of country’s top karate players, failed to perform up to the expectation as he also won bronze in the men’s individual kata event in the morning yesterday.
