Eden student dies 2 days after falling off bike

A student of Eden Mahila College died yesterday at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) after getting injured by falling from a motorcycle on Bijoy Sarani in the capital on 30 November. She breathed her last at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital around 6:40am, said Inspector Bacchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost. The deceased is Aklima Akhter Jui, 24, a masters’ student of the Political Science department of Eden Mohila College.

On November 30, Aklima was critically injured after she fell off a moving motorcycle at Bijoy Sarani intersection. Local people took her to DMCH and after initial treatment she was shifted to the intensive care unit due to severe head injuries.

Hritu Akhter, a friend of the deceased, said Aklima was travelling from her residence in Kazipara to a coaching centre at Farmgate where she worked as an instructor. She had hired a motorcycle through one of the ride sharing apps Hritu said.

“Aklima rode on the bike to reach to the coaching centre. At one point, the motorbike stopped at the Bijay Sarani signal. When the bike stared again after a go signal, she fell from the bike,” Hritu added.

Abul Kalam, Aklima’s father said, “Though she had no major injury marks on her body, her helmet was broken’’ Inspector Bacchu Mia said, Aklima’s body has been kept at the DMCH morgue. “The victim’s family will not file any case over the death as they wanted her body to be buried without an autopsy,” he further added.

Aklima’s family hails from Sundarpur village in Chatkhil, Noakhali. The family lives in the city’s Kazipara area.
