Two held in cases over Tk 1,157cr laundering

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has detained two accused in a case filed over laundering about Tk 1,157 crore. The detainees were identified as Didarul Alam Titu and his associate Kabir Hossain.
Dr Shahidul Islam, director general of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate confirmed the matter yesterday and said that they were held from the Mahatab Center in Bijayanagar in the capital.
He said Didarul, Kabir, Abdul Mutaleb and their assistants have laundered money by importing alcohol, cigarettes, and photocopier machines in the name of Poultry feed machineries.
They imported these products using the name of three non-existent organisation named Mesas Agro Bd Andy JP, Hena Anhui Agro LC, Hebra Brakku and laundered Tk 1,157 crore, he said.
He said at least 11 people have been accused in the case. Of them, two were arrested. Efforts are underway to arrest the other accused, he added.
Earlier, on November 7, the CIID filed a case with the Paltan Police Station against the Mesas Agro Bd Andy JP over money laundering of Tk 431.75 crore.
On the same day, the CIID filed another case against Hebra Brakku for money laundering around 439.12 crore and on November 12, around 290.89 crore with the Paltan Police Station. Besides, on November 30, Custom House Chattogram filed a case with the Bandar Police Station against Kabir Hossain, who was detained for money laundering of about Tk 36 lakh.
