Blast at Naogaon Polytechnic lab; 7 injured

UNB, Naogaon

Seven students were injured as an explosion took place at the chemistry lab of Naogaon Polytechnic Institute on Sunday.

The injured are identified as Atikur Rahman, Rakibul Islam, Rafi Akhter, Shafiqul Islam Shafi, Niyamul Islam, Touhid Shahriar and Sadiqul Islam Shafi. They all are third year students of Computer Technology department at the institute.

Fazlur Rahman, principal of the institute, said the explosion took place around 5:30pm when the students were attending a practical examination at the lab.

Other teachers and students rescued the victims and took them to Sadar Hospital immediately, he said.

Dr Saiful Islam, a surgery specialist at the hospital, said three of the injured are in critical condition and they sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

3-wheeler driver electrocuted

BSS, Bhola

The driver of a three-wheeler vehicle died and another was injured after being electrocuted in Mollah Bridge area of the town on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Md Mahbub, 30, a resident of the municipality.

Police said Mahbub was electrocuted when he was charging the battery of his three-wheeler this noon. The other person was electrocuted as he tried to save Mahbub.

Both of them were rushed to Bhola Sadar Hospital, where the duty doctors declared Mahbub dead. Officer-in-Charge of Bhola Model Thana Enayet Hossain confirmed the incident.

Man to die for murdering girl

UNB, Kishoreganj

A tribunal here on Sunday convicted a man and sentenced him to death for killing a girl after rape in 2017.

The convict is Shahin, 35, son of Manik Uddin of Baratia in Nikli upaizla. The tribunal also fined him Tk 1 lakh.

According to the prosecution, convict Shaheen along with his two associates- Kajol and Rubel- killed Roksan,

15, daughter of Faizul Islam of Sheikh Nabinpur village in Nikli upazila, after violating her in turns on May 11, 2017.

After examining records and witnesses Kishoreganj District and Session Judge Kiron Shankar Haldar handed down the verdict and acquitted two other accused as allegations brought against them were not proved.
