Tigress may have to fight against SL or Pakistan in SA Games final

Sports Reporter, Dhaka

Bangladesh women’s team head coach Anju Jain said they will go to Nepal in the imminent XIII South Asian Games with the hopes of winning gold medal. The Tigresses improved a lot after their jaw-dropping Asia Cup victory, Jain said, adding that they are now working on batting as the batters are inconsistent with bat.

“Women’s team made a good progress after winning their Asia Cup. Therefore, the team played at different conditions, where they put up a good show. Last few months, we played at Netherlands and Scotland. Then we’ll play Sri Lanka,” Anju Jain said. “This time we will go to Nepal for gold medal. We’ve no problem without batting consistency. We’re focusing more on this area,” Jain told media.

“Hopefully our batters could be overcome it and won the gold for Bangladesh,” she added. Captain Salma Khatun is seen SA Games as an opportunity for them ahead of their ICC Women’s World Cup, which will be played in Australia in between January and February, 2020. Salma said they have been working hard in practice since the last two weeks for the SA Games.

“We have been practicing for the last two weeks. We’ve worked on some areas where we had lacking. Actually there is no end of development. We’ve done 70-80 percent. It’s not possible to get hundred percent,” said Salma Khatun.   Bangladesh women’s cricket team is all set to fly to Pokhara for the upcoming XIII South Asian Games (known as SA Games) in Nepal on Friday (2:30pm).

Even though some of the events of the SA Games began earlier of the kick-off at two different hosts cities-Kathmandu and Pokhara although it’ll formally commence from December 1. They played a string of practice matches at the National Cricket Academy of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur as a part of their preparation for the looming Games.

This year Bangladesh are taking part in 25 team and individual events. Of them, they are eyeing gold medals from some events including Cricket, which has returned to SA Games yet another after a eight-year-hiatus.  Bangladesh are the potential contenders of winning gold medal in cricket after India pulled them out from the cricket along with nine other team and individual events from the Games.

The Tigresses have been drawn in Group-B with Maldives and Pakistan, while Group-A has been formed by Sri Lanka, Bhutan and hosts Nepal.  In that case, Bangladesh have a potential of falling against Sri Lanka in the semi-final. For this they have to play better brand of cricket to cruise into the final. But they have to cross the stiff hurdle of either Pakistan or Sri Lanka in the final to triumph the gold medal.
