State Minister for Youth Sports Zahid Ahsan Russel announced yesterday that medal winners in the XIII South Asian Games will be rewarded with cash awards. Sports Minister Russel stated this a view exchanges meeting with the media at the National Sports Council (NSC) conference room. He announced that the gold winner of any individual event an athlete will be awarded with Taka 6,00,000 (six lakhs), silver winner Taka 3,00,000 and bronze winner Taka 1,00,000.
The team events gold medal winners will be awarded with Taka one lakh to each member of the squad, Taka 50,000 each for silver winners and Taka 30,000 each for bronze winners. The sports minister also announced that the ministry has a special fund of taka 10 crores for incentives for the federations to take part in the international competitions. “The federation, who will do good result in the Games, will be provided with Taka 1.50 crore for their long term camp and higher training. “The SA Games is called the ‘Olympic for the South Asian countries’ as the athletes of this region have rare chances to qualify in the Olympic or Asian Games, so it is the beigest sports occasion for the athletes,” said Russel.
“I hope that this time we will do better result in this edition than the previous edition as we provided the fund for training and facilities for the athletes as early as possible. Out of the budget for Taka 30 crore from BOA, instantly we released Taka 15 crores, as we tried not to hamper training of the athletes for financial trouble, so we can expect good result,” said Russel.
“Even from the sports ministry, we also visited different training camp and talked to athletes, coaches, they told us that they can win gold medal. But right now I am not interested to disclose how many gold medals we are expecting to win,” said Russel replying to a query.
Russel also informed that they have taken massive sports programme to observe the ‘Mujib Barsha’ the centenary birth day of the Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 2020. “We plan huge sports programme to observe the 100th birthday of our Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. We will organise 92 sports events including international tournaments round the year from April,” Russel concluded.
