The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technologies (BUET) has imposed punishments on 26 students for their involvement in the ragging and eventual murder of engineering student Abrar Fahad. The severity of the punishments ranges from academic suspension to expulsion from residential dormitories. Director of the institute’s Directorate of Student’s Welfare (DSW,) Prof. Mizanur Rahman, confirmed this during a press briefing outside the vice-chancellor’s office on Thursday.
BUET’s Board of Residence and Discipline took stern action following a meeting on Wednesday and after receiving approval from the DSW director yesterday. Mizanur Rahman, who is also a member secretary of the board, said: “Those students were identified by a probe body formed to investigate ragging incidents in the Suhrawardy and Ahsan Ullah Halls.”
BUET’s decision to punish and even expel those involved in the murder of Abrar Fahad fulfils two of the three fresh demands put forward by the general students who had been carrying on protests for over a month to ensure justice following the murder case.
Electrical and electronic engineering (EEE) department student Abrar, 22, was found dead on a staircase of Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of October 7. He was taken to the dormitory’s room no. 2011 around 8pm on October 6 and beaten mercilessly by Chhatra League men late into the night.
Seventeen others have been suspended for their presence in Suhrawardy Hall.
