Fakhrul, 6 other BNP leaders get bail

Two courts in the capital yesterday granted bail to seven BNP leaders including BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a case filed with Shahbagh Police Station over clash between police and BNP men in front of the High Court on Tuesday.

The High Court bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan yesterday granted eight-week anticipatory bail to the party secretary general, Standing Committee Members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, and party’s law secretary Kayser Kamal.

Meanwhile, another court granted bail to BNP Vice-Chairman Maj (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed and two others in a case filed with Shahbagh Police Station as they were produce before the court after being arrested by police yesterday.

The two other BNP leaders granted bail are- Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon and Jatiyatabadi Hawkers’ Dal General Secretary Mokbul Hossain. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sayeed passed the order. The court also rejected petitions of Detective Branch (DB) inspector Delwar Hossain seeking a 10-day remand for interrogating the trio.

In the High Court hearing, Advocate Zainul Abedin and Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain stood for the bail petitioners while advocate Sagir Hossain Leon assisted them. The HC bench also directed the BNP leaders to surrender before the Dhaka Sessions Judges Court after eight weeks, said Sagir Hossain Leon. He said they filed bail petitions for six BNP leaders but among them BNP Vice Chairman Major (Retired) Hafizuddin Ahmed was arrested by police and Joint Secretary General Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel failed to appear before the court.So, hearing on their appeals did not take place on Thursday, Leon added.   

According to case statement, two policemen were injured in a clash between a group of BNP leaders and activists and police while they were staging demonstrations in front of the High Court on Tuesday seeking party’s chief Khaleda Zia’s release. A number of vehicles were vandalised during the clash.

Later at night, Matiur Rahman, sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station, filed the case for vandalism and assault on police against 28 identified and more than 500 unidentified people.
