STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The High Court yesterday directed the government to stop withdrawal of ground water at four villages----Charkanai, Hulaine, Panchuria and Habilasdeep villages in Patiya upazila under Chattogram district.
The HC bench also asked the government to ensure safe drinking water for the people of the villages until the water crisis is resolved. The HC bench also asked the government to decide with three months on whether the four villages can be declared water stressed area under the Water Act.
It also asked the authorities concerned of the government to arrange supply of portable and household water for the villages until the government decides whether the villages will be declared as water stressed area. The HC bench comprising Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Shohrowardi came up with the directives after hearing on a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association in 2015 seeking necessary order over the matter.
After the HC order, Advocate Syeda Rizwana Hasan, counsel for the petitioner, told reporters that around three hundred tube-wells at the four villages become out of order as H Industries was withdrawing ground water from that area.
