A clash occurred yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon in front of the Supreme Court main gate between police and BNP leaders and activists when they brought out a procession demanding the unconditional release of BNP chairpersons Khaleda Zia, who has been languishing in jail since February 2018. Witnesses said several vehicles were vandalised when the police and BNP activists chased each other. They also said the clash took place when the BNP leaders and activists, under the banner of ‘Muktijudder Prajanmo Dal’, gathered in front of the Press Club and brought out a procession demanding the release of the BNP chief.

At one stage of the procession, the police prevented them when they tried to enter the Supreme Court premises, raising slogans seeking the release of Khaleda Zia. After their procession was prevented, the BNP leaders led by Abdullah Al Noman and Maj. (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed sat in front of the main gate of the Supreme Court. All the agitating leaders and activists sat down on the street in a line, which stretched from the Supreme Court to the Press Club.

The BNP leaders and activists raised slogans demanding the release of the BNP chief and reduction in onion prices and those of other essential commodities. They also displayed banners and festoons in support of their demands. At that time, the whole area reeled under immense traffic congestion, which spilled over to Shahbagh, Gulistan, Chankharpul and Banglamotor areas in the capital. The police requested them to withdraw their sit-in programme, but the BNP leaders refused and, at one stage, the police charged them with batons to disrupt their sit-in programme.

BNP leaders Showkat Mahmud, Shah Mohammad Abu Jafor, advocate Syed Ahsanul Huda, Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal leaders also participated in the procession. Khaleda has been in jail since she was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case in February 8, 2018. She was found guilty in another corruption case later the same year.

On October 29 last year, a Dhaka court sentenced her to seven years in jail in the Zia Charitable Trust case filed with Tejgaon police station on August 8, 2011. The HC on October 31 last year increased her jail sentence to 10 years in that case.
