Dengue cases to hit 100,000 mark

Official death toll stands at 121 since January this year, while unofficial figures claim over 300 fatalities

The number of recorded dengue patients admitted to different hospitals across the country this year is likely to cross the 100,000 mark. Yesterday, the number of recorded dengue patients hit 99,755. Of the total, 52,636 were hospitalised in August alone. In the last 24 hours, a total of 98 dengue patients were admitted to various hospitals across the country. Among them, 46 were admitted to various hospitals in Dhaka, while the remaining 52 went to hospitals outside the capital. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) control room announced in a press release yesterday that at least 519 patients were currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals across the country.

In total, 262 patients are presently receiving treatment in 41 government and private hospitals in the capital. The remaining 257 patients are being treated outside Dhaka. Since January 2019, a total of 98,972 patients have been discharged from hospitals following recovery. About 98.2 per cent of dengue patients admitted to different hospitals across the country were released after treatment, health officials revealed. The health department confirmed at least 121 deaths from dengue fever since January. But the unofficial death toll may cross 300 by the end of the year. The disease was first detected in the country back in 2000, when at least 93 people died. “The DGHS has so far this year analysed 193 out of 264 cases of death and confirmed 121 deaths to have been caused by the disease,” said Dr Ayesha Akhter, who is in charge of the disease control room at DGHS.
