Munier Chowdhury to be recalled on 94th birth anniv today

Munier Chy Award and Zakaria Memorial Award to be conferred

Today is the 94th birth anniversary of martyred intellectual, educationist and playwright Munier Chowdhury.

Marking the day, Theatre, a prominent theatre troupe, will arrange a commemorative program at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital today. Besides, Munier Chowdhury Award and Zakaria Memorial Award will be conferred at the event.

Presided over by Theatre president Ferdousi Majumder, Professor Emeritus Serajul Islam Chowdhury of Dhaka University is expected to attend the event as chief guest.

After the award ceremony, two dramas of Munier Choudhury—‘Swami Saheber Onoshon Broto’ directed by Khurshid Alam and ‘Gotokal Eid Chhilo’ by Tanjum Ara Polli will be staged at the second phase of the event.

Born on November 27 in 1925 in the town of Manikganj, Munier Chowdhury was a staunch nationalist and stood up against all forms of cultural repression. In 1967, he protested against the Pakistan government’s directive to ban Tagore songs on radio and television. He translated a number of foreign plays into Bangla.

Munier Chowdhury achieved literary success chiefly as a progressive writer. He started by writing short stories, but his main interest was in writing plays, especially one-act plays. As in his short stories, his one-act plays are about the disparities and aberrations in contemporary social life as well as about the common humanity which unites all human beings.

He also acted and directed plays for the stage, radio, television and cinema. Two of his notable plays are ‘Kabar’ and ‘Raktanto Prantor’.

He was awarded the Bangla Academy Award (1962) and the Daud Prize (1965) for his plays.

Munier Chowdhury wrote a number of plays, including ‘Kabar’, ‘Dandakaranya’, ‘Palashi Barrack O Anyanya’, ‘Raktakta Prantar’ and, ‘Chithi’.

Munier was picked up on December 14, 1971 by local collaborators and later tortured and killed by the Pakistan Army.

To note, Theatre introduced the Munier Chowdhury Award in his honour in 1989.
