Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash has been made chairman of the Awami Juba League, youth organisation of the Awami League, for the next three years at its seventh national congress, held at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. Parash, the eldest son of Juba League founder Sheikh Fazlul Huq Moni, was elected unopposed.  Chayan Islam, convener of the Juba League congress preparatory committee, proposed the name, while its incumbent secretary, Harun-Or-Rashid, supported it amid huge applause from the participants.
Dhaka north unit Juba League incumbent president, Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, was made general secretary of the Juba League. A total of seven aspirants contested for the general secretary's post.
Leaders and workers of the Juba League vowed to regain the organisation’s good image, which was tarnished by some of its senior leaders who were found involved in illegal casino business and other controversial activities recently. They also took the pledge not to be involved in illegal activities in future and to work for the welfare of the people. The leaders and workers took the pledge by raising their hands, when the Awami League high command called upon them to say no to corruption, drugs, extortion and other illegal activities.
While speaking at the first session of the seventh congress of the Juba league, AL president and Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, and its general secretary, Obaidul Quader, urged the leaders and workers of the youth body not to be involved in illegal activities like casino business.
Addressing the function, the Premier said no one will be spared for being involved in illegal activities. The drive against corruption,

terrorism, militancy and drugs will continue, she added.
After completing the first session of the seventh congress, the AL’s central leaders, led by its general secretary Obaidul Quader, arranged the second session at the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) to finalise the next leadership of Juba League.
After holding a closed-door meeting with councillors and aspirant candidates of the Juba League, Obaidul Quader announced the names of the new chairman and general secretary of the youth body. Quader told the media that he announced the names of Parash and Nikhil as chairman and general secretary following party president Sheikh Hasina’s instruction.
Parash, a teacher of English at Brac University in Dhaka, completed his masters’ degree in English from Dhaka University and later obtained another masters’ in the same discipline from Colorado State University in the US.
The fifty year-old Juba League president is also the elder brother of Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, a parliament member from the Dhaka-10 constituency.
Parash was born in 1969 in Dhaka to Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni and Arzu Moni. Fazlul Haque Moni was the nephew of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Sheikh Fazlul Huq Moni founded the Juba League in 1972 with an aim to alleviate poverty and establish the rights of youths. The last council session of the youth body was held in 2012, when Omar Faroque Chowdhury was made chairman. He was relieved of his responsibilities for his alleged involvement in corruption and irregularities.
Moreover, after starting a cleansing drive within the party in September, many Juba League leaders were arrested due to their involvement in corruption and illegal activities, including running casino business in the capital. Some of the leaders went into hiding after the media published reports.
