PM wants quick disposal

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked the law minister to expedite disposal of sensational cases, according to a minister.  The directive was given at the cabinet meeting held at the secretariat yesterday. Law minister Anisul Huq told The Independent that the Premier asked him to expedite the disposal of sensational cases. Some ministers praised the law minister for the quick trial in the Rajon murder case in Sylhet and the Rakib murder case in Khulna.  Six people were sentenced to death and five to varying terms of imprisonment by the court yesterday for the murder of 13-year-old boy Rajon and 12-year-old Rakib. The killings had sparked mass outrage and protests across the country.
The cabinet also approved the draft of the "Local Government (Pourasabha) (Amendment) Law, 2015” to hold municipal elections on party symbol. After the meting, cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told reporters that the words “registered political party” have been incorporated in Article 2 of the Representation of People’s Order 1972. He said that according to Section 19, for contesting the municipal election for the post of mayor or councillor, candidates will have to be nominated by a political party, or they will have to fight as independent.
The draft law will be placed before Parliament for its approval during the current session, he added. Shafiul Alam, however, said that the proposal of the draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) on manpower export under government to government plus system to Malaysia has been withdrawn as the authorities concerned are yet to finalise it. The cabinet was apprised of the participation of the environment and forest minister in the Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) held in Tokyo on October 7-8 and the visit of a Bangladesh delegation, led by state minister for ICT division, to Saudi Arabia on October 7-10.
