Two projects of Bangladesh Railway, involving Tk 2,108.10 crore, are scheduled to be placed before the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) today.
The projects are: ‘Purchase of metre- and broad-gauge passenger carriages for Bangladesh Railway’ at a cost of Tk 1,374.50 crore, and ‘Procurement of locomotive, relief crane and locomotive simulator for Bangladesh Railway’ at a cost of Tk 733.60 crore.
The project evaluation committee of the Planning Commission has recommended placing the projects before the ECNEC meeting for approval.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) agreed to provide USD 200 million to implement these two projects. Negotiations were completed in July 2015.
According to the detailed project plan (DPP), the project will improve railway transport capacity in Bangladesh on key corridors, such as the Dhaka–Chittagong and Dhaka–Khulna main line corridors, by financing additional rolling stock (locomotives, passenger carriages, and related equipment).
The new rolling stock will enable Bangladesh Railway to satisfy the steadily growing demand and increase its market share. It will also increase the railway transport capacity in the main line network of Bangladesh Railway.
The project will improve the railway transport capacity in Bangladesh on key corridors, such as the Dhaka–Chittagong, Dhaka–Darsana–Khulna and Dhaka–Rajshahi main lines, by financing additional rolling stock, diesel locomotives, passenger carriages and related equipment.
The additional rolling stock will be used to schedule additional trains on these key corridors, which will be possible once the new double-track infrastructure is implemented.
