Yunnan paper-cutter finished masterpiece in four months

Min Huiping is a paper-cut artist in Pu is City and was born in Liming Township of Ning 'er County in 1958. She started to learn paper cutting at the age of six. In less than a minute, a piece of paper can be turned into a lifelike paper-cut in her hands

"I learnt paper cutting from my mother. At that time, only my mother and another person in the village knew how to make paper-cuts," said Min Huip-ing. She went on to tell us that in those years, people usually made their own clothes, and for embroidered clothes, the patterns must be cut out before hands.

In her practice, according to Min Huiping, she has not only reformed some traditional paper-cuts but has developed her own styles as well. For example, she has created more than 400 types of wedding paper-cuts. In recent years, in addition to paper-cuts for weddings and window decorations, Min Huiping has integrated Ning'er local characteristics such as Pu'er tea, ethnic culture and folk customs in her paper-cuts.

At the advice of a friend of hers, Min Huiping has created the large paper-cut "Ode to National Unity”. It is based on the National Unity Oath Monument, and Min Huipin g also studied the history to better understand more details.

 After several years of preparations, Min Huiping started to  work  on  "Ode to National Unity." "It involves more than a hundred characters, and the paper cutting took more than four months before it was finally completed in 2012." The entire work is about one meter long and 60 centimeters wide. Someone offered several thousand yuan for "Ode to National Unity", but Min Huiping believes that it is worth 20,000 to 30,000 yuan.

Min Huiping ha s made great achievements in the art of paper cutting. More than 300 of her paper-cuts have been publish ed in the newspapers and magazines all over the country; her works have been collected by the Nation al Art Museum of China and have been included in the album of The Chinese Art of Paper Cutting. She has participated in the national paper cutting competition on behalf of Yunnan and has won the Silver Scissors award.
