Bangladesh Coast Guard yesterday rescued 119 Rohingyas including women and children from St. Martin's channel in the Bay of Bengal before being smuggled to Malaysia by sea. Staff Officer (Operation), east Zone, Lieutenant Commander Saiful Islam confirmed the matter to the Independent. The detained Rohingyas include 14 children, 58 women and 47 men, the officer added. “Local fishermen informed us about the people. Being informed, we ran a search and found a boat full of people with the engine of their boat broken down. We towed the boat and rescued them. Later, they were identified as Rohingyas from various camps in Teknaf and Ukhia,” the officer said.
