The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday filed two separate cases against Dhaka North City Corporation councillors Habibur Rahman Mizan and Tariquzzaman Rajib for their alleged involvement of amassing illegal wealth. ACC deputy director Gulshan Anwar Pradhan and assistant director Mamunur Rashid Chowdhury filed the cases against the two councillors.
This has been confirmed by ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee. According to the first information report filed against the DNCC, Habibur Rahman Mizan, councillor of ward no. 32, has accumulated wealth worth Tk 30.16 crore through illegal ways including casino business.
Habibur has constructed a market named Habib Plaza on 30 katha of land at Basila road of Mohammadpur. He has also built several buildings in different areas of the capital. All these investments do not match known source of income.
The FIR filed against Tariquzzaman Rajib, councillor of ward no. 33, says that he has accumulated wealth worth Tk. 26.16 crore through illegal means. He has procured some luxury apartments in different posh areas of the capital. On October 12, RAB arrested former Mohammadpur thana Awami League general secretary Habibur from Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar as part of the ongoing drive against the casinos. He was allegedly engaged in corruption, land-grabbing, toll-collecting, illegal taking over of cable and Internet businesses, and gambling.
