Bangladesh Krishak League, an affiliated body of the ruling Awami League (AL), got a new set of leaders at its 10th triennial council session held at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital yesterday. Krishibid Samir Chanda was named as the new president and Umme Kulsum Smriti new secretary of the organisation at the council session. The last council of Bangladesh Krishak League was held on July 19, 2012. Motaher Hosain Molla was elected president and Khandaker Shamsul Haque Reza general secretary at that time. Chanda and Kulsum were the joint general secretaries in that committee.
In the second session of the council, a closed-door meeting was held at the auditorium of Institution of Engineers in the city. After the meeting, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader announced the names of the president and secretary of the new committee.
Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated the first session of the triennial council of Krishak League by hoisting the national flag and singing the national anthem. She also released doves and balloons and later attended a colourful cultural programme. Briefing the media, the AL general secretary said 13 names for the president’s post and 11 names for the general secretary’s post were proposed by the councillors who came from all over the country to attend the council.
“Among them, we selected Samir Chanda and Umme Kulsum as president and secretary, respectively after discussing the names with the organizational chief, Sheikh Hasina. I hope the leaders and workers of Krishak League will accept the duo,” said Quader.
He also said the newly appointed president and secretary will announce full-fledged central committee of Krishak League within the next seven days. On his part, Chanda said: “I will try with my heart and soul to discharge my duties handed over to me by our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. I hope Krishak League will play an important role in protecting the rights of farmers. At the same time this organization will work for strengthening Awami League.”
