60 deer ‘poachers’ held

in Sundarbans

UNB, Khulna

Forest Department officials detained 60 suspected deer poachers while entering the Sundarbans with hunting equipment in three trawlers in Joymoni area of Chandpai Range early Tuesday.

Tipped off that a group of deer poachers were entering the Sundarbans ahead of ‘Rash Mela’, forest guards conducted a drive in the area and detained the 60 poachers, said Md Mahmudul Hasan, divisional forest officer (DFO) of Sundarbans East Zone.

Three trawlers, deer hunting traps, locally-made weapons and stoves were also seized, Hasan said adding that all of them were confined to Sundarbans Chandpai Range office. Legal action will be taken against them, he said.

Work on Tk 40cr drinking water project begins

A TK 40 crore project for supplying safe drinking water among the residents of Ishwarganj municipality began on Tuesday.

Mayor of the municipality Abdus Satter formally inaugurated the work with the installation of pipe line at a function held at upazila premises this noon.

The project, being implemented under the supervision of the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) is expected to be completed by the current fiscal year.

Executive Engineer (PHED) Samiul Haque, Secretary of the upazila Awami League Abdul Hakim, Jatiya Party leader Nurul Islam , Chairman of Shohagi Union Parisad Habibur Rah man Akhand, Councilors and employees, among others, were present in the inaugural function. The Mayor in his inaugural speech said if the project is implemented the residents of the municipality will get facilities of safe drinking water.

“We have also planned to modernize the drainage system and sanitation for the town dwellers in order to ensure healthy environment” , the mayor said.

Delay in bridge construction causes sufferings to people

Hundreds of people of Kunjopatti and Gazir Char villages in Bhola sadar have been suffering immensely as the construction work of a 93-metre-long bridge over a canal is yet to be completed.

Construction work of the much awaited bridge on the canal started in 1917. It was supposed to be complete on 9th September this year but the project is still far away from the completion.  Sources said Local Government and Engineering Department in Bhola allotted Tk 7.86 crore to construct the bridge.  According to locals, a bridge was constructed over the canal nearly 15 years ago, but unfortunately it collapsed into the canal getting stricken by a cargo ship. After the incident, locals cross the canal everyday by boats amid high risks. Farmers, students and officials are the worst sufferers.

During a recent visit in this area Jasim Bepari, a vegetable grower told this correspondent that farmers are suffering much as they carry huge vegetables everyday by boat to the markets of Bhola Sadar.  When contacted, Abdul Sobur, senior assistant engineer of LGED of Bhola office said the construction work is getting delayed due to land acquisition difficulties. The contractor sent an application to the authorities asking for extension of time to complete the work.
