A Bangladeshi fisherman was shot dead by Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) yesterday morning.
Another fisherman suffered a gunshot wound in the incident at the Naf River point along the Jhimongkhali border around 5am.
Border Guard Bangladesh Teknaf-2 Commander Lt Col Faisal Hasan Khan confirmed the shooting incident.
The death victim was identified as Nur Mohammad, 34, a resident of Kharangkhali’s West Maheshkhali while Abul Kalam, who was injured in the shooting, is a resident of the same area.
The injured has been admitted to a local hospital.
Howaikang Union Parishad Chairman Nur Ahmad Anowari said Nur and Kalam went fishing on the Bangladeshi part of the Naf River early in the morning.
Bangladeshi fishermen have often accused the BGP patrols of attacking them without any provocation.
Lt Col Khan said they are observing the situation.
A BGB official later said that a formal rejoinder would be sent to the BGP seeking an explanation for the incident.
