The police have lost their efficiency and are unable to stop miscreants from killing bloggers, publishers and foreigners, according to Brigadier General (retd) ASM Hannan Shah, standing committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He made the remarks at a meeting at the National Press Club yesterday (Friday). It was organised by the Doctors' Association of Bangladesh (DAB) on the occasion of National Revolution and Solidarity Day. He criticised law enforcers for recent failures in stopping killings, describing the overall security system in the country as “very shameful”. He said slain publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan’s father Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque did not seek justice for his son as he could not trust the government anymore. He said the police have lost their skills after being long involved in illegal arrests and filing of cases against Opposition party members.
Dipan was killed in broad daylight in Aziz Super Market, a busy place where there is a police control room within 200 yards. His father knew he would not get justice in this critical period of the country, when a free-thinker, a foreigner, a publisher and even a police constable are unsafe.
How can policemen leave their colleague when he is attacked at a check-post after he stopped a motorcycle for checking, the BNP leader wondered. They are not efficient in arresting criminals, they are very skilled in repressing members of the Opposition party, he added.
