Speakers at a seminar yesterday said down syndrome is not a disease, rather genetic variation and people suffering from it should be treated with extra care and compassion. The seminar was jointly organised by the department of communication disorder of Dhaka University, Down Syndrome Society of Bangladesh, Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital and AMDA Bangladesh on the Dhaka University premises. They were jointly celebrating World Down Syndrome Awareness Month -2019 for the consecutive fourth times in Bangladesh. Chairman of Down Syndrome Society of Bangladesh, Sarder A Razzak delivered welcome speech highlighting the background and significance of the World Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Earlier, a colorful procession was brought out on the DU campus on the occasion of the celebration of Down Syndrome Awareness Month. An informative brochure has also been published on the occasion. The programme ended with a lively cultural programme by the participation of the children, adults and people with down syndrome.
Director of National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-sciences, Prof Dr Mohit Kamal was present at the function as the chief guest, while Chairman of the Department of Communication Disorder Dr Hakim Arif presided over the function.
Managing Director of Neuro - Developmental Disabilities Protection Trust (NDDPT) Md. Moshiur Rahman ndc, Chairman of Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital Prof Sardar A Nayeem, Director of Northern Tosripha Group Rafiq Hassan, RTV Creative Director Syeda Munira Islam spoke at the seminar giving emphasis on ensuring rights and inclusion of the people with Down Syndrome to make an inclusive community in the country.
