GK Shamim, Khaled put on 7-day remand

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

A Dhaka court yesterday placed controversial contractor GK Shamim and former Juba League leader Khaled Nahmud Bhuiyan on a seven-day remand each in connection with separate cases for amassing wealth illegally.

Dhaka senior special judge (in-charge) Md Al Mamun passed the order after rejecting their bail petitions. Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigating officers produced the duo before the court seeking a 10-day remand for each of them. In another development, the ACC filed two separate cases against Mohammedan

Sporting Club director (in-charge) Md Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan and online casino businessman Salim Prodhan for amassing wealth illegally.

In its investigation, the commission found that Lokman amassed wealth amounting to Tk. 4.34 crore and Salim Tk. 12.27 crore beyond their known sources of income. ACC assistant director Saiful Islam filed the case against Lokman, while deputy director Gulshan Anowar Prodhan filed the case against Salim at the commission’s integrated district office.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday submitted the charge-sheet against Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan in a case filed against him for keeping illegal firearms. This is the first charge-sheet to be filed since the crackdown on illegal casino business began on September 18.

Khalid is currently facing two more cases—one under the Arms Act and another under the Narcotics Control Act.

RAB-3 assistant police super Md Belayet Hossain submitted the charge-sheet before Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Devdas Adhikary. It has been mentioned in the charge sheet that Khaled and his cohorts established a ‘criminal empire’ across the capital’s Motijheel, Arambagh, Fakirapool, Shahjahanpur, Mugda, Kamalapur, Rampura and Shabujbagh areas by using illegal firearms to terrorise locals.

Khalid, who is also president of Fakirerpool Youngmen’s Club, was arrested from Gulshan on September 18 by RAB for running an illegal casino in the club.

Meanwhile, the ACC chairman, Iqbal Mahmood, yesterday said that as part of the present drive against corruption, investigating officers of the commission would raid places against which allegations of corruption have been levelled. “The present drive against corruption will continue. The commission would launch investigation against all of them, if the allegation of corruption would raise against anyone,” he added.

The ACC chief came up with the observation while talking to reporters in front of the commission head offic

On October 21, ACC filed two cases against GK Shamim and Khaled on charges of amassing illegal wealth.

Shamim and his mother Ayesha Akhter were charged for earning Tk. 297 crore illegally, while and Khaled has been charged for acquiring Tk5.5 crore illegally.

On September 20, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested GK Shamim and seized Tk. 1.80 crore in cash, Tk. 165.27 crore worth of fixed deposit receipts (FDR), alcohol, and firearms from Niketon in Dhaka’s Gulshan area. GK Shamim is now facing three more cases filed by RAB—one under the Narcotics Control Act, another under the Money-laundering Prevention Act and yet another under the Arms Act.

On September 25, RAB arrested Lokman Hossain, who is also a director of Bangladesh Cricket Board, from his Monipuripara residence with four bottles of liquor. Since RAB started an “anti-gambling operation” on September 18, Lokman was on hiding in different places including Narayanganj.

On September 30, RAB members also arrested Salim Prodhan at Shahjalal International Airport on charges of running an online casino in Bangladesh and money laundering. On October 15, the ACC said it had detected the names of 43 people—some of them politicians and government officials—who have been making illegal wealth through illegal casino business. The commission found the involvement of some current and former politicians, as well as current government officials, during the investigation.

On September 30, the commission launched an inquiry to detect illegal wealth of people involved in unauthorised casino operations and other illegal businesses.

At an emergency meeting on October 15, the ACC assigned its director, Syed Iqbal Hossain, as inquiry officer and its director general, Sayeed Mahbub Khan, as inquiry supervisor.

The ACC had on October 24 imposed overseas travel ban on 22 persons, including two MPs for their alleged involvement in running casinos and amassing wealth illegally.

According to media reports, 60 illegal casinos were operating in the capital until recently. Gambling took place regularly at the casinos situated in Segunbagicha, Motijheel, Fakirapool, Dilkusha, Bank Colony, Arambagh, Naya Paltan, Kakrail, Gulistan, Osmani Udyan, Bangabazar, Gulshan Link Road, Uttara, New Market and Kalabagan areas.

On September 18, law enforcement agencies launched drives against illegal casinos and illegal bars in the capital. Several leaders of the Awami League’s youth front, the Juba League, and others were arrested for involvement in casino and other illegal businesses.
