At least seven houses were vandalised and two people sustained injuries at a village in Jhenidah yesterday during a fight between supporters of Awami League and BNP over establishing supremacy in the area.
Police arrested two persons Akhirul Islam and Paltu from the village for their alleged involvement in the incident, police said.
Sub-inspector of Shailkupa police station Jamirul Islam said there has been enmity between Abdul Wadud, a BNP leader and also an ex-member of Nityanandapur union parishad, and Bellal Hossain, an AL leader of Jugni village. Centering the same issue, Rabbi was beaten up by the supporters of Abdul Wadud on Thursday night.
As a sequel to the incident the two groups attacked each other yesterday morning. Later, the BNP men vandalised houses of AL men Faizer Rahman, Akhirul Islam, Paltu and Shehab Uddin.
In a counter attack the AL men also vandalised the hoses of BNP men Matiar Rahman, Sharafat Hossain and Nurul Joarder. Selina Khatun, a woman and her college-going daughter were hit and injured by brickbats.
Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control They have taken two persons under their custody, the police said.
UP member and AL leader Bellal Hosssain alleged that the BNP men had swooped on AL man Rabbi without any intimidation and vandalised three houses of the AL men.
Shailkupa police OC MA Hashem Khan said the police have arrested two persons from the village in connection with the incident.
