Poet Nurul Huda gets SAARC Literature Award

Acclaimed Bangladeshi poet Muhammad Nurul Huda has received SAARC Literature Award of India, one of the most prestigious literary awards in South Asia. He received the award from Sahitya Academy President Professor Chandra Shekhan Kambar at a programme held at CD Deshmukh Auditorium of India International Centre in the Indian capital New Delhi on October 18. Alongside Nurul Huda, Maldives poet and researcher Ashraf Ali and Nepalese poet Bhishma Upreti have received the award this year.

It may be mentioned that poet Shamsur Rahman received the award in 2001 and Nurul Huda is the second Bangladeshi poet to receive this award. For their contributions in literature, writer Selina Hossain received the award in 2015, Rubana Haque in 2011 and Fakhrul Alam, Kaiser Haque and Syed Manjurul Islam in 2012.

The Ekushey Padak winning poet, acclaimed as Jatisattar kobi meaning 'the poet of national identity’, is also known as a versatile writer, essayist, literary critic, translator, folklorist and IPR-specialist for copyright and traditional cultural expressions. The internationally reputed poet has more than 150 titles published with his poems translated into many languages including English,French, German, Swedish, Russian, Arabic,Urdu and Hindi.

He has won a number of national and international awards including the Bangla Academy Literary Award, the Poet of International Merit (ISP, USA), the Tripura State Award (India), the Mahadiganta Award (India), the President's Honour (Turkey), the Ekushey Padak in 2015, among others.
