In an eventful day’s first match Bashundhara Kings defeated nine-man Chennai City FC by 3-2 to brighten their chance to make semifinal berth of the Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup football tournament yesterday. Held at the MA Aziz Stadium, the do or die match for both Bashundhara and Chennai City FC was highlighted with four red cards, two for Chennai City players and one each for head coaches of both sides.

However, the match was started with some good paces with Bashundhara breaking the deadlock in the very fifth minute through Mohammed Kdouh Jalal making a superb right foot finish after Baktyiar Duishobekov flicked a floating ball from Nurul Nayan Faisal (1-0). The Bangladesh champions looked very confident and offensive attitude right after the kick off and after taking the early lead appeared with more attacking and squeezed the opponents but could not continue the tempo for a long.

As the opponents Chennai City, who were thrashed by Terengganu 5-3 in their opener, begun to play with negative strategy taking rough tackle to Bashundhara players. At one stage, Emon Babu of Bashndhara committed a foul to City’s Charles Ananndraj and players of the City demanded a card for Babu but referee overlooked. Katsumi picked the ball in his hand and came to side-line and engaged with wrangle with Bashundhara coach Oscar Bruzon and one stage he went to the fourth referee’s table and kicked it, then ran to the referee to attack and finally saw the marching order on 24 minutes.

After 12 minutes the match was restarted and 10-man Chennai were about to equalised but an effort of Robert Elsava Suarez saved well by keeper Anisur Rahman Zico. But the Indian side made it success to equalise the margin when a Mashroor shot on a Charles through pass was denied by Zico but was not cleared well and captain Pedro Javier Manzi pushed ball into an open net (1-1). Bashundhara regained the lead on 59th minute with Baktyiar finished with a lovely header on a lofted ball came from left side (2-1).

Chennai saw their another disaster after being reduced to nine men when Roberto saw the second yellow on 59th minute. But the stalwart Chennai City though playing with some negative attitude committing fouls very often, stunned the Bashundhara with equalising again on 71st minute through with Mashoor taking the advantage of defense lapse.

Bashundhara keeper Zico left the post open to catch a long ball but Mashoor getting possession of the ball and volleyed it home (2-2).

Bashundhara despite having nine-man Chennai City FC had to worked hard to win the match when A Robiul shot was returned by goalkeeper but was not fully clear and Jalal shotpast the keeper on the rebounder to salvage the Bangladesh champions to remain in the race to move into the semifinal (3-2).

Bashundhara head coach Oscar Bruzon and Chennai City’s Akbar Nawaz also got marching order due for breaching the rules.
