Indictment in murder case against Khaleda Zia on Jan 16

A Dhaka court yesterday set January 16 to framed charges against 38 accused including BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in a case lodged over killing a person by hurling petrol bomb on a passengers bus in 2015. Yesterday was fixed for holding hearing on indictment in the case, but Judge S Mohammad Ali of Dhaka Sixth Special Tribunal adjourned the hearing till January 16, allowing a time plea of the defence. According to the case documents, unidentified miscreants hurled petrol bombs on a passengers’ bus of ‘Glory Paribahan’ in Matuail area under Jatrabari Police Station on the night January 23, 2015. A total of 31 passengers suffered burn injuries while one of them died at Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Sub-Inspector (SI) KM Nuruzzaman of Jatrabari Police Station filed the case next day after the incident against 50 leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies. Later, the name of Khaleda Zia was added as mastermind to the first information report of the case. Police filed chargesheet against 38 including Khaleda Zia before the court.

A speedy trial tribunal court here on Wednesday convicted a person and sentenced him to suffer life in prison for possessing 300 grams of heroin in Godagari Upazila in the district around one year back. The convict was identified as Mithu Hossain, 38, son of Mujibur Rahman of Kaldighi village under the same upazila, was also fined Taka 10,000 in default to suffer one more year jail behind the bar. Judge of Speedy Trial Tribunal court Anup Kumar found the accused guilty of the charge beyond any doubt and pronounced the verdict in his presence on Wednesday afternoon. According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that a police team arrested Mithu with 300 grams of heroin red-handed from his village on August 27 last year. Upon completion of investigation police pressed charges accusing him.
