A group of agitating teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday besieged two administrative buildings of the university demanding resignation of Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam for her alleged involvement in corruption.

As a part of ongoing movement against VC, teachers and students of different departments took position in front of new and old administrative buildings under the banner of ‘Jahangirnagar Against Corruption’ around 8am and continued demonstration till 4pm.

Protesters said that they are no longer accepting Prof Farzana Islam as Vice Chancellor accusing her involvement in financial scandal. Therefore, they will not allow the VC to do any administrative work. They locked two administrative buildings so that VC cannot enter there to perform daily activities.

Ariful Islam Anik, secretary of Bangladesh Students Union of JU unit, said, “We no longer consider Farzana Islam as Vice Chancellor. For this, we will not allow her to do administrative work. If she wants to continue administrative activities at her home, we will try to prevent her doing this also. We will continue the blockade programme.”

Prof Sayed Ferdous of Anthropology department said, “Prof Farzana Islam has no moral right to be in her post. She has to be removed from vice- chancellor post. Until our demands are met, we will continue this blockade programme.”

Meanwhile, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Nurul Alam and acting Registrar Rahima Kaniz tried to enter the office in the new administrative building in the morning.

But, the protesters did not allow them to enter there. So, administrative activities were remain suspended. Meanwhile, leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of the university unit brought out a procession on the campus demanding punishment of the detained Shibir leaders on charges of creating unstable situation on the campus. Led by JU BCL President Jewel Rana, the leaders and activists of the ruling party’s student wing, brought out the procession from Transport area of the university at 2.30 pm yesterday.
