Former Dhaka University (DU) vice-chancellor Dr Emajuddin Ahmed expressed deep concern over the series of recent killings across the country, saying that people were feeling a sense of insecurity.
He observed that the country’s current situation is deteriorating day by day, and anything undesirable could happen any time.
“Anyone can be killed at any time as each institution has been split into two divisions. People are feeling a sense of insecurity. It is the responsibility of the government to ensure the people’s safety and security,” he said at a discussion meeting at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
Levelling allegations against the government that Opposition leaders and workers were being arrested without having committed any offence, he said, “If the government wants to hold elections by arresting Opposition leaders, the polls would be nothing but a farce.”
Criticising the ruling Awami League (AL) government, the academic said, “The government is arresting high-level leaders of the Opposition by filing false cases. It is unprecedented in history.” He also observed that a crisis of democracy was looming large in the country.
