Sunamganj: A mobile court here sentenced three labourers to seven days’ imprisonment for lifting sand illegally from the Dhopajan river in sadar upazila on Wednesday afternoon, reports UNB. The convicts were identified as Shafiq Miah, 30, Ekhlas Miah, and Liakat Ali, 27, a resident of Dolura village in the upazila. The mobile court led by assistant commissioner A T M Morshed and Anjan Das conducted a drive in the river area from 12 pm to 3 pm and arrested the trio for illegal dredging, said Assistant Sub-inspector Ripon of Sunamganj Sadar Police Station. Later the mobile court awarded them seven days’ jail. They also destroyed two machines used in sand lifting. Meanwhile, another mobile court led by Assistant Commissioner (land) Talut also destroyed five such machines in Bishwam-bhorpur upazila in the afternoon, said Shahidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bishwam-bhorpur police station.
