Police have been directed by the authorities concerned to shoot at criminals if they come under attack while discharging duty.
The directive follows the death of two policemen manning check posts on the outskirts of the capital within a span of 13 days.
Muntashirul Islam, deputy commissioner (DC) of DMP’s media and public relation wing, said the commissioner has directed law enforcers to take necessary steps to prevent recurrence of such killings of policemen by miscreants.
As per the directive, policemen cannot set up check posts without adequate manpower; personnel manning the check posts must wear bulletproof jackets; at least one of the guns at a check post should always be loaded; and if coming under attack, they can fire back without waiting for an order from higher authorities, he said.
Sources in the police headquarters said that the directive has been circulated all over the country.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told The Independent that on-duty policemen can shoot at attackers to protect themselves. “Policemen can shoot the attackers without delay,” he added.
A high-ranking DMP official said on condition of anonymity that the police can fire in self-defence, to disperse rioters, and, if necessary, while arresting people sentenced to death. “But all their actions must be justified upon inquiry,” he added.
On Wednesday, police constable Mukul Hossain (23) was killed and another injured when some unidentified miscreants hacked them at Baraipara in Ashulia. On Oct 22, ASI Ibrahim Mollah was stabbed to death by a youth at Gabtoli checkpoint when a police team was searching his bag.
Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said the USA has offered to “share information” to bolster the investigations into the recent killings in the country.
“They wanted to help us by giving information and other things,” the minister told reporters at the Secretariat after a meeting with William E Todd, US state department’s principal deputy assistant secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs.
Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat, US ambassador to Bangladesh, also attended the meeting.
