National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) yesterday awarded its former directors for their efforts behind making the treatment of heart diseases affordable for the common people. Recalling their contributions to the expansion of treatment facilities for cardiovascular diseases, NICVD director Prof STM Abu Azam handed over crests and gifts to the awardees at the institute auditorium in the capital. The awardees are Prof Abu Zafar, Prof MA Zaman, Prof M Jalal Uddin, Prof M Nazrul Islam, Prof Emeritus Sufia Rahman, Prof AWF Elahi Chowdhury, Prof AKM Muhibullah, Prof Abul Hossain Khan Chowdhury and Prof Abdullah Al Safi Majumder. Taking a stroll down memory lane, former director Prof MA Zaman said, “I’ve passed a long time of my career here. So many buildings were not there at that time. I made sincere efforts for the development of this institute. Whenever I pass by the institute, I think how it’s running currently.” The NICVD started its journey on July 1, 1987 under tehg leadership of National Professor Brig (Retd) Abdul Malek. Since then, the hospital has been providing treatment for cardiovascular diseases at a minimal cost or for free. The hospital is providing services such as angiogram, stent placement, setting up pacemaker, bypass surgery, valve replacement and vascular surgery.
