The Appellate Division of Supreme Court (SC) yesterday upheld a High Court (HC) verdict that declared as illegal use of the national anthem as ringtone or welcome tune by mobile operators.
Disposing a leave to appeal petition filed by mobile operator Aktel, now Robi Axiata, against the HC order, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha directed Robi to stop using the national anthem as ringtone or welcome tune.
The bench also directed Robi to donate Tk. 30 lakh to charitable organisation, National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital, at the earliest. Counsel for the petitioner Advocate Masud Ahmed Sayeed told reporters that the SC has asked Robi to donate Tk. 30 lakh to National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital in Mohakhali, Dhaka.
