Intern doctors protest �assault� on fellows

SYLHET: Intern doctors at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital (OMCH) went on an indefinite work abstention on Wednesday night protesting assault on their two fellows and called off the strike next morning, reports UNB. They joined works withdrawing the strike around 8am as the hospital authorities assured them of settling the dispute over the attack in a legal way, said Mohammad Mazharul Haque Amit, president of Intern Doctors Parishad.
Hospital sources said a patient, Abdur Rashid, 70, a resident of Rajargoli area of the city, had died at the hospital on Wednesday evening. A relative of the deceased raised an allegation of wrong treatment as reason for the death. Over the issue, people from the decease’s side in a sudden swoop physically assaulted two intern doctors-- Suyeb Ahmed and Prince. Protesting the incident, the intern doctors of all departments at night abstained from discharging their duties. The emergency section of the hospital was also closed for half an hour. On information, police rushed to the spot and arrested Johurul Islam, son of Rashid. Protesting the incident and demanding punishment for the attackers, the intern doctors also brought out a procession. Later the situation calmed down to some extent at night. But in the morning, the agitating interns again announced to go on work abstention and continue it until the culprits were punished. Later getting assurance from the hospital authority, they joined works.
