A Dhaka court yesterday placed MA Matin, who was arrested in connection with the murder of Italian citizen Cesare Tavella, from Benapole border area, on an 8-day remand, reports UNB.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Adnan Hossain passed the order when Detective Branch Inspector Mohammad Zaher Hossain produced him before the court seeking a 10-day remand.
The court also rejected the bail plea filed by Matin’s lawyer SM Shawkat Hossain.
In the bail petition, the counsel said Matin, also younger brother of MA Quayum, joint convener of Dhaka city BNP and a former BNP-blessed ward commissioner, is innocent and he has been arrested for just harassment.
He also mentioned that some plain-clothes men identifying them as detectives picked up Matin from in front of his residence at Madhya Badda in the city on October 20. His family members filed a general diary with Badda Police Station in this regard.
Earlier, detectives arrested MA Matin on Wednesday night for his suspected link to the murder when he was trying to leave the country.
The name of MA Matin appeared in the confessional statement of Vagne Russel who had been arrested along with three others from different areas of the capital on October 26 in connection with the murder.
