The Election Commission has proposed to keep the provision allowing ministers and members of Parliament to take part in the campaign on behalf of candidates in the municipal polls.
The "most important persons" of the government will be able to take part in the campaign, but they have to do it without taking government facilities, Election Commissioner Md Shah Nawaz said yesterday (Thursday).
“We have proposed in the draft election rules that the most important persons of the government will be able to take part in the local body election campaign. But they will not be able to do it by taking government facilities,” he told reporters at his office in the EC secretariat in the capital.
“We have sent the draft election rules and election code of conduct to the government after the Ordinance on municipal polls under the party banner was issued. After it is vetted by the law ministry, the EC will issue the gazette of the amended election rules,” he said.
In the existing local body election procedures, there were restrictions on ministers, members of Parliament and majors to take part in the campaign on behalf of candidates.
The Election Commissioner said as the local body election is going to be held under the party banner, they have proposed a provision allowing most important persons to participate in the campaign, like it is done in the parliamentary polls.
Earlier, on Wednesday Election Commissioner Mohammad Jabed Ali said the Election Commission wants to arrange the countrywide municipal elections between December 22 and 24.
“We want to hold the municipal elections between December 22 and 24,” he told reporters at the EC Secretariat office on Wednesday.
The election schedule for the municipal elections is likely to be announced in the next week, he said.
Besides, the Election Commission has sent the draft of the rules and the code of conduct regarding the municipal elections to the Law Ministry for vetting.
