The High Court (HC) yesterday fixed November 3 for passing its order on a bail petition filed by Moazzem Hossain, suspended officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonagazi police station, in connection with a case filed on charges of video recording the statement of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi and circulating it on social media.
The HC bench, comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman, set the date after concluding the hearing on the bail petition. During the hearing, Moazzem’s lawyer, advocate Abdul Baset Mazumder, prayed for his client’s bail, saying that he did not circulate the video and that he had been suffering in custody for a long time. Deputy attorney general Sarwar Hossain Bappi opposed Moazzem’s bail prayer, saying that the trial court had already recorded the statement of eight witnesses and was scheduled to record the statement of the investigating officer (IO) of the case on October 30.
At this stage, Moazzem should not be granted bail, he argued. Earlier, on July 9, another HC bench had rejected Moazzem’s bail petition in the case, saying that he had utterly failed to protect Nusrat’s life and damaged the police department’s reputation.
