JU VC removal demanded

VC-backed platform holds counter programme

A group of teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday staged a demonstration on the campus demanding the resignation of Vice-chancellor Professor Farzana Islam.

As per their pre-announced programme, over 100 teachers and students brought out a protest rally from the Social Science faculty that paraded different roads on the campus.

They also held a discussion at the Murad Chattar after the rally.

Addressing the function, under the platform of ‘Jahangirnagar Against Corruption’, Professor Kamrul Ahsan of Philosophy department said, “VC-backed group are trying to envelop the irregularities and corruption of Vice-chancellor Professor Farzana Islam. JU BCL confessed that they took huge amount of money from VC. So, it has already proven that VC and her authorities became corrupt”.

Denouncing the VC-backed platform, that has been formed recently, Protester Farhad Haresh Bhuyan of Law department said, “JU VC has formed new platform as she failed to face our movement ethically. Many teachers of her group are involved with different irregularities and corruption. So, how will she face us”.

Meanwhile, VC-backed teachers and staffs brought out a silent procession on the campus.

Newly formed VC backed platform ‘Jahangirnagar Against Injustice and in Favour of Development’, over 200 teachers, officials and employees took part at the procession around at 11am.

Addressing the rally, President of JU Officers' Association, Md Abu Hasan said, “Yesterday we formed new a platform to support the development work of the university. I urge everyone at the university to come and work together on this platform. Under this platform we will prevent any wrongdoing of the university and will work for development activities”.

Prof Abdul Mannan of Physics department said, “A group wants to hamper the development activities of the university in favour of their own interest. I would urge all not to interrupt the development project and to work together to continue the development activities”.

Conducted by the spokesman of the platform Prof Dr Mohammad Alamgir Kabir, JUTA President Prof Ajit Kumar Mazumder, President of JU Employees' Union Sharif Uddin, President of JU Employees' Association Manir Hossen Bhuiyan, Prof Dr Hanif Ali of Computer Science and Engineering department, Chairman of Fine Art department Sharmin Zaman, Prof Sufi Mustafizur Rahman of Archeology department spoke, among others.
