Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is all set to host the inaugural edition of the Women's U19 World Cup which will be played in Bangladesh in 2021.
BCB President Nazmul Hasan Papon made this disclosure at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday after his return from the ICC board meeting held in Dubai.
Talking to reporters at the airport, the BCB chief said, “It was previously announced that it will be a eight-team World Cup but we've finalised this issue which he termed as a ‘major issue’ by saying that the number of team has been increased on BCB’s request and now it will be a ten-team event where Bangladesh will also participate."
Since the ICC U19 Women's World Cup will be played for the first time, it's an honour for Bangladesh to host the inaugural event and BCB chief said arranging such event is a significant achievement for the board.
But above all, it will be a challenge for the cricket board to form a U19 women's team within this shorter period of time. However, the BCB president expressed his optimism to build an organised team to compete in the main event.
Talking about the issue Papon said, “We don't have any U19 women's team. So forming a team as well as preparing them within a year will be extremely hard for us. At a glance, it's a good opportunity and also a stiff challenge. But we'll try to organise a good team,” he added.
While India alone to host the 13th edition of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in 2023, Nazmul Hasan said the board will try to arrange few of the matches in Bangladesh.
"If we construct our new Stadium in due time, it will be easy for us to tell them to organise some matches here. Though we haven't discussed about the matter yet but the possibility can't be ruled out either," he further added. Talking about the newly appointed BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, the BCB chief thinks it will strengthen ties between the two boards.
