The Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) will shut down its mining activities for the next two months, officials told The Independent.
The country’s largest coal mining company will cease its extraction activities as it is run out of coal in coalface no-1308, in where it was carrying down its extraction in the last one year.
The company is now constructing coalface no-1312 to resume the coal production and it will transfer the extraction activities there as it has proven reserve of coal.
The construction of coalface will take two months. The new coalface is loaded with around 5,00,000 tones to 6,00,000 tonnes of coal in stock, said officials of the BCMCL. The official said that BCMCL already has 2,00,000 tonnes of coal and it is sufficient to run two units of 250 Megawatts power plant for at least four months. At present the one unit is functional as there is not that much demand of electricity.
The company is expected to produce 2,000 metric tonnes of coal daily after resumption of production.
“Our production will reach at 2,000 metric tonnes from zone-1312 once the extraction activities start there,” an official said. At the time, its output is likely to be around 80,000 metric tonnes per month, the official added.
Coal output at Barapukuria was earlier suspended on July 20, 2018 as it was required to go into new phase of seam in the coalmine. Labour unrest also pushed suspension of coal production.
Three units of Barapukuria Power Plant, having a
capacity to generate 525MW of electricity, will require at least 4,500 metric tonnes of coal every day for power generation.
But, the coal mine will be able to supply only 3,000 metric tonnes of coal when its production starts in full swing, creating a shortfall of around 1,500 metric tonnes daily, said an official concerned.
So, the industry will experience a shortfall of around 5.47 lakh metric tonnes of coal annually and the government will have to import more coals to run the plant smoothly, the official said.
