The murders of two policemen by criminals within a fortnight are extremely worrying. Stabbing to death of a police constable and injuring another by unidentified miscreants at a check-post in Ashulia, on the outskirts of the city, on Wednesday has laid bare the fact that even policemen are easy preys for the terrorists . The killing of an assistant sub-inspector at the Gabtoli police check-post triggered concern among the police force in particular and the common people in general. The murder of a second policeman just after 13 days has only added to the concerns. This kind of incident may contribute to people’s erosion of confidence in the abilities of the police force.
When ghastly murders of freethinkers are occurring in the country, people have reasons to seek protection from police. But when police themselves become victims at the hands of terrorists, how much can people expect from them for their own safety and security ? As reported, the attackers in the latest incident were only two in number while the policemen were five in number with their firearms. It is surprising how two criminals could overpower all the five policemen. It is even more surprising that three policemen with firearms fled to the nearby forest without firing a shot or coming to the aid of their endangered colleagues. Such a cowardice on the part of police is unthinkable. This raises question about their training, skill development, efficiency and bravery. What kind of training did they receive before joining the police force ?
There are allegations that many policemen entered the force after nominal training that did not make them fit enough to discharge their duties properly. This is very unfortunate. When policemen cannot protect themselves from sudden attacks on them , how will they protect the common people ? After the murder of the ASI at Gabtoli, the higher authority of the police should have been cautious and deputed policemen who have gained proper skills, to man the check-posts. That they did not is revealing of the unpardonable callousness of such higher authority in the police administration.
The three policemen who fled the scene out of fear must be sacked immediately. This will act as a warning for other policemen to take their job with the seriousness the same deserves. In future, only properly trained policemen should be put on duty at the check-posts who would be able to face any challenge from the terrorists.
