Today most children’s parties have a return gift, but I didn’t realize adults also love one! My friend Krishnan, whom I call Kris called me over to spend a few days with him and his family, I went over and was surprised to find Kris devoid of his man Friday, "Where's Chandru?" I asked sorely missing the presence of the family retainer who would have been out at the sound of the car returning from the airport, to help take the bags in.
"I've sacked him, " said Kris looking strangely at me.
"For what?" I asked.
"Well it's a long story," said Kris as Kamala his lovely wife joined him on the verandah where I sipped a coconut. "You know my mother is in America?"
"Yes ofcourse!"
"She's been working for Avon!"
"Ah!" I said, "I know!" "And she keeps sending me Avon products; aftershaves, trinkets, watches, magnifying glasses, compasses, the works!"
"Which," said Kamala, "Kris used to store in his cupboard!" "And which store place my dear Chandru found out about!"
"So he stole your stuff?" I asked.
"Well not exactly!" said Kris as he took my empty coconut shell and threw it in his vast back yard, "not exactly!"
"So what did he do?" I asked impatiently.
"Bob how many times you been over here?"
"Over a dozen in the last five years maybe more, I've stopped counting!" "And you've been tipping Chandru every time you leave?"
"Shouldn't I?" I asked, "I thought it's the done thing to tip the help when you leave a house!"
"And how much have you been tipping Chandru?" asked Kris a little crossly as Kamala tried to kick him gently.
"I don't keep an account of such things!" I said stiffly and the matter was not discussed farther.
It was while I was loading the car to return to the airport after a relaxing stay with the two that Kris smiled. "Missing something?" he asked.
"Not really!" I said quickly, but not before Kris thrust a small present into my palms.
"Return gift!" he said quickly, "I believe Chandru did this to all our guests, gave them a nicely packed return gift from my Avon collection!"
"Thanks!" I said.
"Hey you're forgetting something!" said Kris and Kamala laughed with him, "You're forgetting the extra tip for the return gift!"
I laughed out loud and suddenly remembered Chandru's open palms after he gave me a gift, "That's how Chandru got rid of all the gifts!" laughed Kamala, "he didn't steal, he just got a reward for giving them off to whoever stayed with us!" We laughed and the next time I went to Kris's place I saw Chandru back, "How come?" I asked.
"People stopped coming home, with no return gift..!" laughed Kris.
